Proverb

Ūtonga no ta mahũa.

Translation

Riches are like flowers.

Comment

The traditional proverb stresses the beauty of being rich as well as the transcience of being wealthy. In the postproverbial, wealth is celebrated as the ultimate possession of man, compared to bride-price which in itself is symbolic of the acquisation of wealth. This gives the poor hope that they too have a chance to be rich. Yet, there is a “traditional postproverbial” - gũthĩna no ta gũtahwo [to be poor is like to be dispossessed] demonstrating that no situation is permanent since even the wealthy can be dispossessed.
